The Class of Love
2010-11
Research music on love, collect samples of songs, analyze common themes, generational themes, and all factors that separates and connect the data and theorize conclusions using information on music and the brain and emotions. Once complete, analyze data and formulate theory. Possibly create love song based on most common themes, can be a mash-up, or create 10 min. mix using sections of at least 20 songs. You can group to prove point or just use and a data collection, if grouped, make clear what process was involved and why. Present in digital format either by slide show or collage, or any creative visual manner that visually creates an overall concept. Use research done on love, relating to themes of anthropology, history, sociology, psychology, biological, economic, and media sources to validate findings.

Sharing Love...
Research Project - “Love and Music.” - Linda
What is or are the questions you want to answer?
The main question I want to answer in my presentation is how the theme of love is reflected in music. To break this down more specifically, I want to find out what kinds of love are covered and if love is revealed in a positive or rather in a negative way. I will look at the words used to express love but also I will take the melody into consideration trying to find out whether there is a connection between the choice of words and the tune.
List possible research and resources!
One of the most important resources will be the media of music itself, mainly CDs or MP3s.
Also, I will do some research on the internet in order to get inspired by different homepages about music. I might look at some playlists like top of love songs, do research on the lyrics of love songs, look for music videos on youtube or read articles on love songs. In addition to that, I will do research on several texts (from books, papers, internet) about love in general to get some background knowledge on love, considering, for example, historical, psychological and biological aspects.
Consider possible outcomes – hypothesis!
I would guess that the most common kind of love discussed in songs is the bright side of love between men and women; the love within a relationship. In contrast to this kind of love, the pain of love or the lovesickness probably will be another big theme of love songs.
I assume that love songs which deal with the positive effect of love will be romantic, quiet and harmonious in melody. Contrary, the songs reflecting heartache due to love might have a melancholic and dramatic tune.
List the media you will use and the process you will take to test hypothesis!
As mentioned above, the media I will use is music. The process I will take to test my hypothesis requires several steps. First, I will decide on twenty songs I will deal with. I am going to look at the lyrics in order to find out what words are used to express love. Then, I will decide, whether these words are revealing a good or a bad opinion of love. Next, I will listen to the songs in order to analyse the melody of the song. Furthermore, I will determine what kind of love is displayed in each song. Finally, the songs will be compared to each other so that hopefully there will be a remarkable conclusion on what is similar and what is different and whether my hypothesis was wrong or right. To present my results, I will extract the most significant part of each song and create one new song. Depending on the outcome, I might oppose the parts showing contrary reflections of love in a fast about-face. In other words, the new song would consist of two types of sections: the positive and the negative aspects of love. These two types of sections will then be replayed in change.
