Sharing Love...

Research Project - Love & Cinema - Michael

I will analyze 10 movies from the same genre which is romantic film. Therefore I want to distinguish between:

-romantic comedy and

-romantic drama

My aim is to show how romantic movies work and to reveal the recipe for success. Therefore I will concentrate my analysis on

-what romantic movies have in common and

-whether I can figure out patterns, major themes or standard situations

-what is the message of the film; by analyzing that I will look and see how it affects us and if yes. how do we get affected and influenced by this media.

The next step would be to take a closer look on the possible kinds of endings:

-happy ending

-unhappy ending

-unsatisfying ending

What does the viewer expect and what does he prefer?

Finally I will draw a connection between movies and economic, sociological, psychological and political themes in order to see why we supposedly can identify ourselves with some movie characters.

I picked 10 movies from different time periods so that I can analyze the genre from its beginnings until now. This way will be easier to find differences and similarities and in the end the recipe(s) for success. I did not chose the following movies because I have seen them all and love them. I investigated on the internet which means I read some film critics and watched trailers in order to find a broad variety of different, interesting and entertaining movies. The hypothesis would be that romantic movies exaggerated, highly dramatic and most of the time pure fiction.

1.Notorious (1946)

2.Sabrina (1954)

3.Breakfast at Tiffany´s (1961)

4.Bonnie and Clyde (1968)

5.Annie Hall (77)

6.Beaches (88)

7.When Harry met Sally (89)

8.Ghost (90)

9.Cruel Intentions (99)

10.Before the Sunset (2004)

By analyzing the movies I have planned to do a self-experiment. I will try to note down my emotions and reflect why some scenes do touch me others not so as to possibly disprove the hypothesis.
